James Myatt joined the Project in 2025 as the new training yacht for the Rona Sailing Project volunteers to use to build experience and gain qualifications. She replaced Lady Shona who was sold to a watch officer and retired to Devon. James Myatt is a Moody 36 and named after Lieutenant Colonel James Myatt, CVO, a skipper and trustee of the Rona Sailing Project until his his premature death at the age of only 51. He was a well-respected leader and ocean racing yachtsman, instrumental in the inception and early days of Sail training, Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Tall Ships Races and was responsible, along with David Cobb, for setting up the Royal Yachting Association Proficiency Scheme – he was the first Yachtmaster with the certificate number 0001.
He was passionate about sail training and gave the opportunity to many young people to take part in the Tall Ships Races through the memorial trust set up in his name. On the closure of the memorial fund, we were delighted that the family and trustees trusted the Project to continue his legacy with a training boat.
